“Free jazz can be a knotty foreign language to learn, especially without any prior jazz context. Which is why the self-titled debut from Triptych Myth was such an Aha! moment for me in late 2003. … Triptych Myth -- the trio of Cooper-Moore (piano), Tom Abbs (bass), & Chad Taylor (drums) -- opened my ears. You can almost hear the directions unfold before your ears throughout the disc, which mixes hard, left-hook swingers with reflective improvisations. Right from the outset, opening cut 'Stem Cell' pounds a hard line that devolves before your ears and somehow finds its way back to the melody.” - Lars Gotrich, NPR, A Blog Supreme. Key early work from Cooper-Moore. This collection documents the integration of his homemade instruments into his music & the development of several themes that have become personal touchstones in his concept that incorporates avant-garde jazz, theater, traditional American & African musics, & so forth. Several of the tunes were released in different forms elsewhere - "Prayer" turned up on David S. Ware's Birth of a Being LP and "In the Beginning" had been recorded for Alan Braufman's Valley of Search album. Hear a few tracks.
